Workshop 3 – Texture & Touch

Some paintings are meant to be looked at. Others make you want to reach out and touch them.

Join us for a hands-on abstract acrylic painting workshop exploring one of the most exciting elements of painting—texture. Together we'll discover how to build rich, tactile surfaces that add depth, movement and personality to your artwork.

Using palette knives, credit cards, bubble wrap, sponges and other unexpected tools, you'll experiment with a variety of techniques to create expressive marks and sculptural surfaces that simply can't be achieved with a paintbrush alone.

Whether you prefer subtle texture or bold, dramatic effects, you'll finish the workshop with a unique abstract painting full of character and techniques you'll continue using long after the day is over.

Workshop 3 of 6 — Texture & Surface
(Join one workshop or complete the full six-workshop series. Each workshop explores a different element of abstract painting while also standing alone as a complete creative experience.)

Date: Saturday 29 August 2026

Time: 9:00am – 12:00pm

Venue: Rebecca Hayes Fine Art Studio, Woorree, Geraldton WA
(exact address will be given in booking confirmation email)

Cost: $88 per person (inc. GST)

Includes: All materials, light morning tea, tea and coffee.

Places are limited and bookings are essential. Prepayment is required to secure your place.

During the workshop you will learn:

• Palette knife techniques including spreading, scraping and dragging paint

• How to create interesting textures using unconventional tools such as credit cards, bubble wrap and sponges

• Impasto techniques for building raised, sculptural surfaces

• Sgraffito techniques to scratch through wet paint and reveal the layers beneath

• Dry-brush techniques to highlight texture and create depth

• How to balance smooth and textured areas to create movement and visual interest within an abstract painting

Suitable for all skill levels. Whether you're completely new to painting or already have experience with acrylics, you'll be guided through each technique in a relaxed, supportive and encouraging environment.

Fair warning—this is the messiest workshop in the series, and that's entirely the point!

All materials are supplied, and you'll leave with a finished abstract painting you'll be proud to take home.

This is Workshop 3 in a six-part series exploring the foundations of abstract painting, including colour, value, texture, composition, colour relationships and mixed media. Each workshop is designed to stand alone, so you're welcome to join just one or continue building your skills across the full series.

Workshop 4 – Where Things Go will be held on Saturday 12 September 2026.
